Communication: What to Ask and What to Share with your In-Home Caregiver

Communication is key in any relationship, including the one that has been established between you and your in-home caregiver, or even between you and your loved one’s caregiver. Aqua Home Care is here to match each potential in-home care recipient with a reliable, qualified caregiver based on needs and personality. Still, we want to ensure that this pairing continues to grow into a positive and trusting relationship long after first meeting. We are aware that needs can change as time goes on, and we want you to feel comfortable communicating any concerns that may arise whether you are the one receiving care or you have a loved one receiving care.

Throughout our years serving our community and surrounding areas, we have found that a special bond forms between caregivers and their clients. Caregivers often spend a great deal of time in a client’s home, attentively seeing to their needs and ensuring well-being. Thus, they can be a great source of information as they tend to personal care and keep watch over every aspect of daily living. You may find that there are questions you wish to ask regarding your loved one. Some general questions you may find helpful to ask include:

  • Is my loved one having any trouble taking their medications?
  • Are any side effects occurring as a result of their medications?
  • Does there appear to be any changes in the quality of their vision, hearing or memory?
  • How often and how much are they eating?
  • Do they seem to be struggling or improving in any given area?
  • Are they receptive to receiving help with daily tasks, or are they insistent on doing them independently?
  • Have you noticed any concerning behaviors or behavioral changes?

Asking questions helps ensure that you have all the latest information regarding your loved one while enabling you to make informed decisions regarding their care. On the other hand, there is also information that is important to share when you are personally receiving care.

  • Changes to medications
  • Doctor’s recommendations
  • Improving or worsening symptoms
  • Changes regarding any allergies
  • The need for more or less assistance in any given area
  • Any concerns that may arise

Aqua Home Care is here to guide you every step of the way. When questions arise or personal information changes, it is important to let them be known. Being well-informed allows your caregiver to offer the most efficient support, and staying abreast regarding the care of your loved one can provide reassurance and peace of mind. Whether you or someone you love is receiving daily living support, keeping the doors of communication open plays a key role in quality care and a positive in-home care experience.
