Brain Health: Staying Sharp with Nutritional Wellness

It is no secret that eating healthy provides numerous benefits for our bodies. When it comes to weight management, heart health, blood pressure, sugar levels, energy levels and so much more, what we put in our bodies can have lasting impacts. While it is absolutely important to get the proper nutrition that will aid in lessening or prolonging such health issues, there is a less often considered factor that plays a vital role in wellness. Many tend to forget about the complex powerhouse that is responsible and essential for keeping all bodily functions functioning properly. Our brains make it possible for us to continue thinking, learning, remembering, growing, moving and feeling. From the blinking of our eyes to the pumping of our hearts, each voluntary and involuntary movement is made possible by this vital organ.

While our brains aren’t always at the forefront of our thoughts, they sure do deserve a lot of credit. Maintaining good health is key, though this can be more difficult to manage and keep up with as we age. Here at Aqua Home Care, we believe that proper nutrition and mindfulness doesn’t have to pause when support at home becomes necessary. Caregivers we refer are able to help their clients with with grocery shopping, meal preparation and feeding among other daily living tasks. These services can be included in one’s custom care plan for in-home care. It takes a great deal to keep the control center that is the brain up and running and, as we age, systems may not run as efficiently as they once had in the past. Still, there are ways to help maintain and prolong optimal performance simply by choosing foods that promote a healthy brain. Some studies have shown that the following healthy choices can aid in brain health. These include, but are not limited to,:

  • Wholegrains – Contains glucose which provides the energy needed to keep our brains running properly
  • Blueberries – Contains antioxidants that fuel and heal the brain. Studies have shown they may help improve memory in older adults
  • Salmon – Contains high levels of omega 3 fatty acids with DHA that can help prevent and fight dementia
  • Broccoli – Contains vitamin K and improves cognitive function
  • Nuts – Contains healthy fats and vitamins that may help prevent the damaging of brain cells that leads to dementia
  • Seeds (sunflower, flax, pumpkin) – Contains vitamins and antioxidants that can reduce cognitive decline

Ensuring proper nutrition on a daily basis can do so much more for the body than what can be seen in a mirror. Eating well feeds your brain the vitamins and minerals it needs to run smoothly and to stay sharp. Of course, speaking with your doctor will help better determine proper course of action to better health. Our brains play a crucial role in our lives, and taking steps to preserve brain health and well-being with foods rich in nutrients can be a simple act that helps in a big way
