Communicating with your In-Home Caregiver: What to Ask and What to Share

Communication is key to any relationship, including the one you have established with your or your loved one’s in-home caregiver. Aqua Home Care is here to match each individual seeking support with a reliable, qualified caregiver based on needs and personality. Still, we also want to ensure that this matching continues to grow into a positive and trusting relationship long after your first meeting. We are aware that as time goes on, your needs may change. We want you to feel comfortable communicating any needs and concerns, whether you are the one receiving care or you have a loved one in our care.

We find that a special bond forms between caregivers and their clients. Often, caregivers spend a great deal of time in a client’s home, attentively seeing that their needs are being met. They can be a great source of information as they tend to personal care and keep watch over each aspect of daily living.  If you have a loved one in a scenario such as this, there may be questions you wish to ask in order to stay current on their daily life and needs. Certainly some questions you may wish to ask are dependent on individual medical conditions or health issues, though here are some general questions you may also find helpful:

  • Is my loved one having any trouble taking their medication?
  • Are they experiencing any side effects from their medication?
  • Does there appear to be any changes in the quality of their vision, hearing or memory?
  • How often and how much are they eating?
  • Do they seem to be struggling or improving in any given area?
  • Are they receptive to receiving help with daily tasks, or are they insistent on doing them independently?
  • Are there any concerning behaviors?

Asking questions helps ensure that you have all the latest information regarding your loved one and it also enables you to make informed decisions regarding their care. On the other hand, there is also information that is important to share with your or your loved one’s caregiver.

  • Changes to medications
  • Doctor’s recommendations
  • Improving or worsening symptoms
  • Changes regarding any allergies
  • The need for more or less assistance in any given area
  • Any concerns that may arise

When questions arise or personal information changes, we want you to feel at ease knowing that you are being heard. We strive to make the best matches possible so that each in-home care experience is comfortable with reliable, compassionate, quality care.
