Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month

During the month of March, we take a closer look at the disease known as multiple sclerosis. Members of the health community, educational facilities and families may be seen hosting events, planning fundraisers and raising awareness in order to spread updated information and continue with new research. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system and it has been diagnosed in over two million people worldwide. In individuals with MS, the protective insulation that surrounds the nerve fibers in the brain and spine becomes inflamed and deteriorates, causing damage to the nerve fibers. Hardened tissue replaces this insulation and can be found in various places throughout the central nervous system. As a result, communication between the brain and the body is disrupted.

Living with MS poses daily challenges, though symptoms range in severity depending on the amount of nerve damage and nerves affected. Signs may include numbness and tingling, fatigue, vision problems, spasms, dizziness or loss of balance, issues with bladder or bowel function, impaired speech, and coordination issues. Symptoms may be chronic, mild or may not be felt for periods of time.

When symptoms make daily, independent living difficult, it helps to have a trusted, reliable caregiver nearby. Some may turn to family while others seek in-home care services. Aqua Home Care has years of experience matching care professionals with individuals in need of support. For those seeking in-home care services, we make it our priority to select caregivers based on individual needs and personality. We refer experienced, compassionate caregivers who bring quality care and service right to their client’s door. Services that can benefit individuals living with this and other conditions include:

  • Mobility assistance
  • Meal preparation/feeding
  • Assistance using the facilities
  • Medication reminders
  • Heavy housecleaning
  • Transportation
  • Personal grooming and hygiene
  • Dressing
  • Companionship
  • And more

While there is currently no known cure for multiple sclerosis, medications and therapies can help alleviate symptoms. MS is a lifelong condition with symptoms that range in severity, affecting each person differently. Raising awareness for this disease helps shed more light on its existence, spread knowledge and gain support for continued research. Knowing the signs of MS can also help individuals advocate for themselves or for a loved one who may not yet be diagnosed. Here at Aqua Home Care, we encourage those experiencing concerning symptoms to talk with their doctor. Signs of MS can be similar to those seen in other conditions as well, and it is important to get a proper diagnosis. If daily living assistance is required, Aqua Home Care offers our services to help find trusted care at home.
